Choosing a pathway to apply to

KPMG Australia

We organise our roles into pathways so you can find the right one for you more easily.

At KPMG, we have teams who work on almost any challenge. When clients come to us with a problem, we assemble teams to tackle it. These teams can be made up of people from a range of areas of our business with different specialist skills, or they might be multiple people with the one specialty for more definitive challenges.

The fact that we have so many specialist teams and can help with almost any challenge means that there are a lot of options for students coming into our graduate and vacationer programs. It’s exciting to see the opportunities ahead!

Someone with an accounting degree could fit into a number of teams across several divisions (business areas) of our firm, depending on the sort of work you’d like to do and which office location. It can be overwhelming to look at lists of teams and work out where you best fit, so we’ve organised our recruitment into four pathways that combine key skills and type of work.

The four pathways encompass teams from all areas of the business, which we call divisions. Our divisions are Consulting; Audit & Assurance; Deal Advisory and Infrastructure; Enterprise; KPMG Futures; Tax & Legal; Business Services.

Here we explain our four pathways and share some tips on applying.

Audit, Corporate Finance and Assurance

From auditing the ins and outs of a business, to reporting on environmental risks or assisting a Chief Financial Officer in implementing regulatory changes, these teams support the building blocks of trust in our society. They are key partners in keeping businesses effective, evolving, and growing sustainably and they deliver quality advice using innovative technologies and data-driven insights.

A few of the teams in this pathway:

  • External Audit
  • Actuaries
  • Life Insurance and General Insurance Consulting
  • Business and Tax Advisory Consulting (in our Enterprise division)

Tax & Legal

Our tax practice supports clients in planning and problem solving: planning strategies, projects and transactions while providing compliance services and technology to help solve tax problems. We focus on helping our clients meet their compliance obligations, realise planning opportunities and engage with markets and regulators. The work in this area is increasingly important to organisations’ as they are becoming more exposed to complex changes in tax regulation. Our Tax and Legal team are committed to responsible tax practice and we focus on helping our clients meet their compliance obligations, realise planning opportunities and engage with markets and regulators.

Our Tax Practice offers a Tax Rotation Program of 3x 6-month rotations across different teams to explore areas of the tax practice.

A few of the teams in this pathway:

  • Tax Advisory (in our Enterprise division)
  • Employment Tax
  • Immigration
  • Tax Controversy and Dispute Resolution
  • Corporate Tax (rotation program)
  • Trade and Customers (rotation program)

Business, Consulting, Risk and ESG

Problem solvers and deep thinkers are at home in this area, where the focus is helping clients improve performance and innovate.

This could include modelling demand for nurses in rural locations, building a plan for a regional council to increase population, designing the end-to-end experience for a health insurer’s customers, or identifying risks in a paper company’s supply chain and almost everything in between. It’s all about bringing fresh perspectives to our clients’ challenges and collaborating across areas to deliver the best solutions.

A few of the teams in this pathway:

  • Forensic Risk
  • Transformation Project management
  • Policy, Economics and Public Impact
  • KPMG Indigenous Services
  • Risk and Assurance (in our Enterprise division)

Engineering, Digital and Technology

Teams across these areas use their specialist skills to develop sustainable solutions to challenging problems and are focused on building for better. Their work spans data science, construction and project management, cloud implementation, IT strategy development, cyber, ethical hacking, and much more, and they’ll often work alongside other KPMG teams to support our clients.

A few of the teams in this pathway:

  • Audit Data and Analytics
  • Technology Advisory
  • Technology Risk and Cyber
  • Planning and Infrastructure Economics
  • Microsoft Applications

Tips for your application

When you apply, you’ll be asked to select a pathway. You also then have the option to drill down further if you have additional preferences underneath that. For example, within Audit, Corporate Finance and Assurance, you could then tell us that you’re most interested in Actuaries.

Providing any further preferences after choosing your pathway is entirely optional and not mandatory.

TIP: Stay open to opportunities. If you only select a pathway, you’re leaving your opportunities open to roles that fit with your degree and skills notes in your CV. Our Emerging Talent team will review you against all open and appropriate roles.

TIP: Multiple pathways can be selected in the one application! You might have a double degree and be open to roles in Tax & Legal as well as Business, Consulting, Risk & ESG pathways. The application form gives you the option to select a secondary pathway – no need to complete a second application form!
